What is Narasimha Chaturthi?
Narasimha Chaturthi is a celebration of the appearance day of Lord Narasimha, half-lion half man incarnation of Lord Narayana. Narasimha manifested himself on the Earth to free his five-year-old devotee Prahlad from rage and ferocity of his demonic father Hyranyakashipu. This is the fiercest incarnation of the Lord – those with negative qualities inside, dread of Him, however, He is the sweetest of all to a true devotee. Narasimha symbolises God as a protector, very much like the Guru on one’s spiritual path, His appearance demonstrates that the Lord will do everything for His devotees.
What is abhishekam?
Abhishekam is a Hindu ritual during which a deity is washed with five substances – milk, yogurt, ghee, honey and sugar, representing the five elements of water, earth, fire, air and ether respectively. During the ceremony the 5 elements within ourselves are being purified together with the space where the ritual is being performed. The elements also correspond to the five senses: water – sight, earth – taste, fire – hearing, ether – smell and air – touch. Abhishekam is accompanied by devotional music and everyone is welcome to sing.
