Part 1: Who is the Spiritual Master – The Satguru
In the build up to the UK online country darshan on 01 July and Gurupurnima on 05 July 2020, we will share a series of posts explaining who the Spiritual Master is, and the significance of meeting one in this lifetime.
Are all Guru’s ‘Satguru’s’?
In short – no! There are many Gurus who are part of a disciplic succession, they can be very knowledgeable and have some state of realisation. The Satguru however is the final destination, He is the one who can directly deliver Divine grace. To the willing devotee He can gift the fullness of Divine experience. Other Gurus can help, guide and instruct, but to emphatically impart God realisation is something completely different. Such a personality is extremely rare.
What are the qualities of a Satguru?
A Satguru cannot be gauged by any external attributes and His personality bears no indication of His Divinity. Certain qualities of a satguru such as self-control, humility, patience, forgiveness and love may or may not be apparent according to our judgements. But the point is a Satguru cannot be assessed according to our judgements born from the mind. The proof of the Satguru lies in our inward experience. When we see through our connection with Him that we are being caused to transcend our ego and limitation, then we start to realise that the one who is creating this change is already above the ego. When we see how He relentlessly works for our upliftment, then we start to see His patience in action. When we see how we have more love for God, for humanity and life – then we understand that the Satguru is love itself. The true wealth of who He is can only be known once we delve into our relationship with Him.
Does a Satguru have mystical powers?
Mystical powers are present in all kinds of personalities. Those who have progressed some way in yoga practice can gradually cultivate siddhis, or extraordinary abilities. Clairvoyance, the ability to heal, the ability to manipulate energies and so on, can all be obtained by spiritual practice. The Satguru however does not accumulate powers through austerity, they exist within Him as a natural by-product of who He is. If one is the embodiment of Divinity, then naturally material laws no longer exist for such a person. But these abilities are never used for selfish gain, or for mere showmanship. They only ever become apparent when there is a need for them to be demonstrated. They are exercised purely for the welfare of others. That miraculous cure, that manifestation, the ability to appear in dreams, seeing the future, showing omniscience; all of these are done to inspire, elevate and protect devotees. The Satguru knows when it is appropriate to exercise them and when it is right to show devotees that He is using them.
How can a Satguru help one to attain liberation?
Liberation means ultimate freedom – establishing our true relationship with God. Firstly, Satguru stands as an embodiment of the goal we are seeking. One of the biggest qualities of a satguru is that he is free, above pain and pleasure, above the ways of the world. Simply being in His presence and knowing Him is in itself a transformative experience. The Satguru shows through His being, that real freedom and a transcendent state is a possibility and something worth striving for. Secondly, the Satguru knows your Dharma or your purpose in this life. He is therefore able to guide and instruct you on your path. Scripture and tradition provide solutions, but the Satguru instructs the individual on what they have to personally do to grow on their path. He knows the nature of the individual, what they can handle and what they cannot. He knows when it is appropriate to be sympathetic and compassionate and when He should be firm and clear. The Satguru is also a mirror. He graphically demonstrates and shows the limitation of the individual. He reveals the negativity and inner barriers which are holding them back. Once we become aware of these, He helps us to rise above them. The more we do so, the more we become free of our negativity. The Satguru reveals the true nature of God. Often we can have a fantasy of what we believe God should be, of what is appealing to us. But the Satguru shows and actively demonstrates the true personality of the Divine, He brings us face to face with ourselves and the Supreme. Once we have a certain maturity and depth of connection, then the Satguru bestows grace. Grace is the force and blessings of God that causes us to pierce through material conditioning to have a glimpse of the Divine. It is the essential factor that makes real, authentic experience happen. Ultimately it is the gift of God Himself. It is the thing that does everything.
Can the Satguru wipe out karmas from the past?
Grace does exactly that. Karma is impressions in our consciousness which give birth to our character and indeed certain life situations. So long as we are materially conditioned with our mind and ego then we will be burdened by past karma. One of the qualities of a satguru is the ability to wipe the slate clean, to clear the shackles from past experiences. But such a thing does not happen randomly. When the devotee has placed themselves in the hands of the Satguru, when He has given up all else and surrendered to Him alone, then such a thing can happen. This is the promise of all devotional traditions, that through grace we are made pure and are elevated to our ultimate state.
Can the human intellect truly comprehend the essence of the Satguru?
The mind is bound by logic and rationality which is nothing but a product of this material world and can not fully comprehend the true qualities of a satguru. The Satguru is not from this material world, but from something infinitely beyond. The mind, therefore, cannot reach Him. It can judge, analyse and calculate, but it can never know Him. It can never understand His motives, and why He does what He does. The essence of the Satguru is not to be devoured with the mind, it is to be completely lost in. In fact the whole process of being with Him is about silencing the mind that insists on knowing, and instead become absorbed in the connection we have with Him.
